Tips For Spring Cleaning Your Garden, Shed, Tools or Equipment

Now we have got rid of all of that wintery weather (hopefully) you can finally start planning your garden layout or have a good spring-clean in time for the sunshine and showers. Trees are starting to blossom and the days are getting sunnier, which means only one thing; gardening can commence!

As Spring officially started at the end of March, I’m sure you’re already aware of the things you can be doing in your garden. We’ve decided to collate some tips and advice on what you should be doing in your garden at this time of year to get rid of any unwanted visitors and how to prepare for the sunny seasons ahead!

Weeding

Although this may need to be done at any time of year, weeding is important not only for the presentation of your garden but also for the longevity of your plant life. Of course, this can be done manually or by using chemical weed killers but ensure you read instructions when using chemicals in your garden.

Lawn Care

Running a rake along your garden will help get rid of any dead moss and make any weeds more visible. Applying fertilizer to your grass will encourage healthy growth, help maintain a deep green colour and allow it to get the best dose of nutrients from the surrounding environment.

You should never use an electric mower with an extension cord on wet grass. If it squelches or it sinks as you walk on it, it is too wet! Also, ensure the blades are sharp for the best cutting.

Garden Tools and Equipment

Sharpen any pruning tools or shears you use in the garden, whether you do this yourself at home or have them done professionally, now is a great time to do so.

Be sure to clean tools and equipment after every use, shake off any excess dirt and wipe off other dirt with a damp rag or use a bucket of water. Make sure all tools are dry before storing to prevent rust.

Flower Beds

Clear out any plants or flowers that didn’t survive the winter and prune any remaining perennials ready for another season. Again, make sure any weeds don’t get comfortable in your flowerbeds, as they tend to take all the nutrients your plant requires.

And yes, the beginning of Spring also means you want to start preparing/planting your flowerbeds and their soil. Be sure to work compost or soil when it is damp and not wet, as this allows the soil particles to separate leaving room for air, water and other nutrients to penetrate.

Repotting

Any plants grown in a plant pot or container that may have been there for several years or have outgrown them can now be transferred to a newer, bigger pot. Giving your plants a new home and a fresh compost mixture, will give your plants a new lease of life, literally. When repotting plants, allow room for growth and place in a slightly bigger plant pot than the plant itself.

These are the months every gardener has been waiting for, you can finally get your fingers green again and spend your spare time pruning, preparing and perfecting your garden ready for another season.
